The Senate’s permitting bill, the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, is being sold as a way to modernize America’s electric grid. But the bill also contains provisions that would lock in the Trump administration’s drilling, mining, logging, and development approvals on public lands. If it passes, a future president, the courts, and the public would be nearly powerless to challenge or reverse approvals issued under the Trump administration.
This map shows places where the bill’s anti-public lands provisions could do lasting damage, from sacred sites around Chaco Canyon and Bears Ears to caribou habitat in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, to the headwaters of the Boundary Waters, to historic landmarks like the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Click or tap any point to see what’s at stake there and which sections of the bill put it at risk. This list isn’t exhaustive. Almost all public land outside of national parks and other permanently protected areas could be adversely affected by the bill’s bad provisions.
